Zeitgeist

Zeitgeist

Definition: "The ideas, beliefs, and interests that are typical of most people during a particular time in history and are expressed in the culture of that time"

Zeitgeist is a duo project resulting from curation and recreation / improvement of light installations made by artists Helene Strese and Mauricio van der Maesen.

Zeitgeist - Dynamic Opto-Mechanical Installation.

Interaction reduced to the fundamentals. Handmade machines that project, move and give meaning to images of seemingly trivial elements.

Zeitgeist shows a dynamic opto-mechanical installation, combining light, mechanisms, transparent media and images. The mechanisms incorporate translation, rotation, magnetism, and reflection that merge erratic and rough movements with fluent and frisky creations of water shapes, glass and light.

The pieces included in this installation were generated using optical simulation software, computer assisted design and digital manufacturing. Electronic control and precise opto-mechanics are required to generate the resulting projections.

The resulting images reflect on common modern social issues such as self-isolation, creation of identity through social media and the distortion of reality caused by the excessive use and trust in globalised online media.
